The American pika is adapted to the cold climate in high-elevation boulder fields and alpine meadows in the mountains of the American West. But the very adaptations that have allowed this species to survive make pikas extra sensitive to the changes wrought by climate change. Rising temperatures threaten pikas by shrinking their habitat into disconnected "islands," leaving them nowhere to go. 

Our society's dependence on fossil fuels and consumption has created the climate change crisis that threatens us all.
